Another fine addition to the Arcata streetscape was this exercise in excess, a prewar Chevy done up in black paint with flames. Decorating our car with flames comes off as a bit tacky sometimes, but with the hot sun gleaming off of the car’s yards and yards of chrome, I couldn’t be happier that some old guy still puts work into building, maintaining, and driving such a pastiche of automotive Americana as this. Until I start seeing turbine-powered Hyundais screaming down the boulevard, I don’t know if there will be any hot rods as wild or original as those of the postwar years. But really it did not trouble me to see yet another person put their money into fabricating their own personal vision of that classic hot rod fantasy. Especially when it’s covered in flames.
