Jim Culp shoots Chris Amon at the 1970 German Grand Prix

Jim Culp, Pacific Northwest photographer extraordinaire, was at Hockenheim for the 1970 German Grand Prix and caught this shot of Chris Amon counter-steering his March 701-Ford through the corners. This was the first year that Formula One left the Green Hell of the Nürburgring.

If you’re wondering what the cars sounded like, and what the drivers had to say about switching from the Nürburgring to Hockenheim, check out this contemporary five-minute feature shot on the 1970 Großer Preis von Deutschland.
